Good morning Oppo, weekend project time for me. The DSLR and some new clothes have been collecting dust, so I exercised them in a lockdown-approved photography session.

The cars had to be moved—a minor pain due to the narrow street. But the real challenge was borrowing the local involuntary model and convincing/paying her to get dolled up for this.

Kinja'd!!!

Equipment:
Canon EOS 40D (yes, ancient)
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens
Soft white flash umbrella + stand
Canon Speedlite 430EX on wireless trigger
Ladder

The results were pretty good; the flash umbrella provides a very even light distribution .

There are still a few visual distractions in here, so I will crop it further for portrait use.

That’s nice of you to let her borrow your new clothes for the shoot!

The 40D is a great body and that Tamron is in a league by itself value wise. Nothing touches it for the same money.

I had no idea you could get a crop equivalent 24-70 2.8 for $300. Sometimes I wish I went crop just for weight and money savings. Also I hope the local model looks more excited to be there with her fox mask removed... My local model absolutely hates being in pictures and ruins every one on purpose.

Is that REALLY Megan Fox?  I’d recognize her face anywhere, but I’m wondering if this is a deep fake.

Nice! I do like the lighting. Also that car looks hard to get in and out of now that you see someone in the door opening. It looks like you have to sit on the sill and then slide onto the seat.

It is, espe cially for taller people, and also for anyone dressed as above.

For the latter, you’ll just need someone to block you. I f you’re dressed normally and not tall or high-heeled , the traditional one-leg-in will work .

I thought it was Megan Akita, but YMMV.

She just hates having to spend half an hour being told what to do, but that role reversal is only temporary...

She was, however, impressed enough with the pic that she wanted to share it.

I’m 6’3” so I’m assuming I’d have problems lol. The 4Cs must be smaller than they look in most  photos. Once you put a person on one they seem to be quite small.

I just bought one used in 9+/10 condition for $135 including shipping. The only lens I know of that’s any better is genuine L glass and who has money for that? To go with that lens, I bought a 50D body with 53k actuations from a reputable used camera dealer for $164 including shipping and you get a very  good, very versatile DSLR for $300. The thousand-dollar consumer kit from Costco won’t even touch it with its skinny plasticky lenses. Not even close.

That seems like a sweet low buck setup.  I think I'm only about 2k deep into glass but that's for a full frame Trinity setup.

I round up to 6'1". They are small cars. I’d put them at halfway between an Elise and a Cayman in terms of the door opening. Once inside, the 4C is closer to a Cayman in cabin space, minus the nice shelf behind the seats, minus the glovebox, minus the arm rests, minus the.......ahh, minus everything.

Lo buck. I had a 7D body, but I sold it to my brother. I have a 50D with that Tamron 17-50 and a 5D mki with a 50mm f/1.4 Sigma prime. That’s the value for a standard prime: Sigma either 50mm for the full frame or 30mm for the crop. Both f/1.4.

At the time (circa 2008), I was debating whether to splurge on the Canon equivalent, the highly regarded 17-55 f/2.8.

You get a s tabiliser and a tiny bit more zoom, but is that worth 3 times the cost of the Tamron ? Probably not, and especially not with today’s much more sensitive cameras which let you increase the shutter speed in lieu of the stabiliser.

Thanks, s he was satisfied enough with the pic to share with her friends, which I can’t say has ever happened before in my long history of pestering her for help with staged photos .

Yeah, I'm generous like that.  Might as well have them broken in ahead of my work teleconference on Monday morning.

If you’re talking L glass, then I think it’s pretty much superlative. But unless one is a pro and has removed most of the luck from their shooting, it’s very spendy.
